Alessandra Di Martino is Full Professor in Comparative Public Law at the University of Rome Sapienza,
School of Law. She was Associate Professor from 2019 to 2022 and Researcher from 2011 to 2018. She
holds a Degree in Law (hons., 2002) and a PhD in Theory of State and Political Comparative
Institutions (2007) from Sapienza University, as well as an LL.M. in German and European
Constitutional Law from Humboldt University in Berlin (hons., 2004). She was Research Fellow in
Comparative Public Law at the University of Siena (2006-2010) and visiting scholar at Columbia Law
School, New York (Fall Term 2014). She was visiting lecturer at MacKenzie University in São Paulo,
Brasil (2025) and at the University of La Habana, Cuba (2023). She is qualified to practice the legal
profession and is registered with the Rome Bar Association.
Prof. Di Martino teaches Comparative Public Law and Comparative Fundamental Rights at Sapienza
University, School of Law. She is member of the teaching body for the PhD course in Public Law. At
the same University, she has lectured on Comparative Public and European Law (with F. Saitto) in the
Light of European Experience, Landmark Decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court on Fundamental
Rights and Freedoms, The European Protection of Human Rights in Europe. She also lectured on
Constitutionalism and Globalization as well as Privacy and Freedom of Information at the University
of Siena (2007-2008).
She was coordinator of a research unit in a 2022 PRIN on Framing National Human Rights
Institutions: European and Comparative Interplays. She was coordinator of university-projects on
Fundamental Rights and Equality. Contemporary Debates; Constitutional Comparison and Legal
Transplants: Method and Practice between Constitutional Cultures, Global Spaces and Statehood; The
Dimensions of Fundamental Rights; Constitutional Adjudication and Preliminary Ruling; Constitutional
Courts and Democracy; The Work of Konrad Hesse. She coordinated a project with E. Olivito on
Generations of Fundamental Rights and Female Subjectivity. In addition, she has taken part in several
national and international research projects on Fundamental Rights, Democratic Constitutionalism and
Economic Crisis, State Security and Constitutionalism, Statehood and Supranational Constitutionalism,
the Making of Italian Constitution and Political Culture, Corruption in the Public Sector of the EU
Member States (the latter financed by the European Commission and coordinated by Düsseldorf
University’s Istitut für Parteienforschung in 2006-2007).
Prof. Di Martino has taken part in numerous national and international seminars and conferences.
She was member of the editorial board of the web Journal of the Association of Italian Constitutional
Lawyers (2004-2009); she is now co-editor of Rivista di Diritti Comparati and on the board of direction of
Nomos: Le attualità del diritto. She is member of the scientific committee of Athena. Critical Inquiries in
Law, Philosophy and Globalization and of Diritto pubblico comparator ed europeo.
She is fluent in German and English, with a good knowledge of French, Spanish and Portuguese.
She spent research stays at Humboldt University (Berlin), Max Planck Institut für Ausländisches Recht
und Völkerrecht (Heidelberg) University of Chicago-Law School (Chicago, Illinois) and Institute of
Advanced Legal Studies (London).
She is a member of the Italian Association of Constitutional Lawyers, the Association of Comparative
Public Law and European Law (DPCE), the Italian Association of Comparative Law (AIDC) and the
Gruppo di Pisa Association. She is member of the Kuratorium of Dimitris-Tsatsos-Institut für
Europäische Verfassungswissenschaften, Hagen, Germany.
